Sky Italia: towards a shared data culture

Sky Italia: a media brand investing in data culture

Sky is one of the leading European operators in the entertainment and pay TV sector. In a competitive and constantly evolving environment, Sky has chosen to invest in data culture as a lever to boost innovation, optimise processes and respond promptly to business needs.

The challenge: misalignment between data and decisions

In 2019, Sky Italia launched an ambitious digital transformation programme to promote a truly data-driven corporate culture.

Despite a high level of analytics maturity, the organisation was dealing with overly centralised Business Intelligence systems, poorly suited to self-service use.

This rigidity slowed the flow of information and limited team autonomy in analysis.

The transition required not only the introduction of new technological tools, but also a cultural and organisational evolution.

Through a tailored strategy, pilot projects and an agile learning approach, Sky has set in motion a virtuous cycle of continuous improvement, based on data-supported decisions.

Tableau as a catalyst for change

With our support, Sky Italia has accelerated its journey towards modern, distributed BI, adopting Tableau as its tool for visual analytics and decision intelligence.

1. INTEGRATION OF A UNIFIED DATA SOURCE

The introduction of BigQuery as a centralised data warehouse enabled the structured integration of corporate information sources. Interoperability with Tableau allowed seamless access to data, enabling a shared, up-to-date and scalable information system.

2. DEMOCRATISATION OF DATA ACCESS

The goal was to make information accessible, interpretable and actionable for all business teams. Thanks to Tableau, Sky has made data intuitively available to all key roles, reducing dependence on technical functions.

3. TRAINING AND EMPOWERMENT OF STAFF

Through dedicated training paths and an internal support platform, teams were equipped to operate independently in Tableau, consolidating adoption and accelerating the spread of data culture.

4. EVOLUTION TOWARDS ADVANCED REPORTING

Collaboration with our BI team has guided Sky towards more evolved reporting: simpler in structure, consistent in content and automated in analysis processes. The dashboards developed support continuous monitoring and performance optimisation.

    IMPROVEMENT IN DELIVERY TIMES
Becoming data-driven requires maturity and sustained commitment. It is a journey that demands the refocusing of several business areas and is grounded in a targeted strategy, built on concrete objectives and the specific market and company context. At Sky, the value extracted from data is the strategic core: we identify with precision where and how it is generated.
Mattia Cinquilli, Data Platform & Analytics Director, SKY
The dashboard built for Sky Glass monitors the various components of the journey and provides an overview of customer-facing performance. It is a tool that brings processes into focus and has allowed us to refine them, with a significant impact on cost reduction. We can therefore improve the service and proactively reach out to customers experiencing issues.
